Read moreThe compact sedan segment has been dominated by the Honda Civic for several years. The Civic is not only the best-selling car in its class, it is also the best-selling car in Canada. The Hyundai Elantra is also very popular, but it struggles to catch up with the Civic despite a redesign last year.
The 2020 Honda Civic and the 2020 Hyundai Elantra are two models that look and feel the same in some ways but are completely different in others. For example, both are comfortable, and both are spacious, but it's the 2020 Honda Civic that has the edge over the 2020 Hyundai Elantra when it comes to power, efficiency and safety.
More powerful and equally economical engines in the 2020 Honda Civic
The 2020 Honda Civic is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. This engine is not only more efficient than the powertrain in the Hyundai Elantra, but it also offers the same fuel consumption rating of 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers.
The 2020 Hyundai Elantra offers a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. We are talking about a noticeable difference in power between the two base engines with the Civic showing more power.
While the Elantra is limited to one engine, the 2020 Honda Civic offers several more. Available as an option is a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder developing 174 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, much more powerful than the Elantra's engine.
The Honda Civic is also offered with a 205-horsepower four-cylinder turbo engine or a formidable 306-horsepower four-cylinder turbo in the Civic Type R.
No matter what engine you take, ultimately you will get more power and better performance in the Honda Civic.
Safety is standard in the Honda Civic
You will also get much better safety, as the 2020 Honda Civic comes standard with the Honda Sensing package. The latter includes adaptive cruise control, accident prevention system, lane departure prevention and several other advanced driver assistance technologies. All of these technologies are standard in the Honda Civic while they are optional in the Hyundai Elantra.
